Exams made easy; it’s the new age of online examinations

It will soon change the face of Indian examination. MeritTrac, India’s largest testing company unveiled its next-generation service November 19 offering,

With the new service, MeritTrac hopes to convert a lot of the offline exams into an on line process, but retaining some of the exams as the way it is, of course with the student’s feasibility. Biju Zachariah, Vice President (Education Business) corroborates: “We want to transform the kind of exams that have been conducted in all these years in the country, and make it more efficient and transperant, which we think online examinations are the best way to do it. But for exams which are better done offline, it will be retained the same.”

Panel to suggest reforms in NITs entrance examination

ALLAHABAD: Concerned over mushrooming of private coaching institutions for pre-engineering students and growing dependence of students on them for cracking the entrance examinations, the National Institute of Technology Council — apex decision making body of NITs in the country — has formed a three-member committee to suggest ways and modalities for introducing new reforms in the entrance exams for all its 20 NITs. This is in line with a similar measure introduced by the IITs.

Throwing light over the new exercise, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) director Prof A B Samaddar said, “Uptil now the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) enabled aspiring engineers to gain entry into NITs. But it was observed that the coaching institutes created a hype about the entrance test projecting it as a puzzle rather than examination which could not be cleared without their guidance.”

AIEEE plans to go online

On the lines of the Common Aptitude Test (CAT) for management courses, the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) plans to conduct the exam online. The government has set up a committee of National Institute of Technology (NIT) directors to explore the possibility of making the exam online, in addition to the regular pen and paper test. The committee will submit its report by January 2010.

The committee will also deliberate on giving Class XII board exam marks weightage during the entrance exam. This came up after NIT directors said that the proliferation of coaching institutes was skewing the pattern of entrants into NITs.

Nearly 10 lakh students appeared for AIEEE for roughly 24,000 seats in engineering colleges across the country. This includes NITs, state engineering colleges, the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and deemed and central universities. The number of aspirants is expected to increase significantly over the next few years and the NIT council feels that an online test would facilitate the process.

However, some members of the council felt that an online test would not be feasible considering poor internet connectivity and the non-availability of computers in the rural areas. “All students are not familiar with computers. Hence, written tests should be a part of the system,” director NIT Hamirpur IK Bhatt said.

DTU admissions on basis of AIEEE from next yr

From 2010-11 academic session the Delhi Technological University (DTU) would be admitting aspirants from the NCT on the basis of their All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Formerly known as the Delhi College of Engineering, an affiliated college of Delhi University (DU), DTU has been upgraded to an university. While changing its admission policy DTU has now decided to complete the admission process for its undergraduate programmes on the basis of merit of rank of AIEEE results.

DTU has 85% of seats reserved for Delhi candidates and 15% for outside Delhi students. While students for outside Delhi category has been admitted on the basis of rank obtained in AIEEE so far, the students from Delhi were selected on the basis of the rank obtained in the Combined Entrance Examination of DU. “From the next academic session the admissions for both the category would be based on AIEEE rank, through the counselling conducted by DTU,” said assistant registrar, K Singh.

The admissions would be made to 14 BTech courses including 10 programmes of the erstwhile DCE, and four new courses introduced this year including B Tech in software engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, automotive engineering and engineering physics. The combined intake of these courses would be 910. The prospectus is expected to be made available from February.

Coaching for govt school students to start early

Coming to the rescue of not so financially secure students enrolled in government schools who dream of preparing for Pre-Medical test and Common Engineering Test well in advance, Punjab Edusat Society in collaboration with Gyan Sewa Trust under Sarv Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) would start a satellite programme from November 16.

To prepare aspiring doctors and engineers in government schools, a training programme was started in 2008 for those who took Class XII exams. But, it would be launched well in advance this year so that candidates get ample time to prepare.

District technology coordinator Narinder Saggar said, “The services are meant for not only government school students but also outsiders, who are left behind because of hefty fees that private tutorial groups charge. It is simply a step to give shape to their dreams of becoming a doctor or an engineer.” He further added, “No intelligent students should be left behind because of financial constrains.”

The course would be free of cost for students of government schools but if any outsider wants to join, he would have to pay nominal fees of Rs 1,000, which would include study materials too. The classes, which would continue till the exams would and cover syllabus of CET, PMT and AIEEE and others, would be held from 8.30-9.50 am.

Experts in different subjects would be invited to give lectures. After the syllabus ends, mock tests would be conducted, said Saggar.
