Electronic Warfare Products

BAE Systems Australia’s EW capabilities span the complete spectrum of engineering activities from operational analysis through design, production, simulation, verification and platform integration. This includes complex EW system integration programs such as Wedgetail and Echidna, EW product development such as ALR-2002 and PRISM, concept demonstrators, Quick Reaction Tasks (QRT), rapid prototyping, customer service and support.

Current products and solutions include:
• Wedgetail Electronic support Measures (ESM)
• Wedgetail Electronic Warfare Self Protection (EWSP)
• Echidna EWSP
• Sensor Independent Integrated Defensive Aids Suite (SIIDAS)
• ALR-2002 Radar Warning Receiver (RWR)
• Passive Radar Identification SysteM (PRISM) III ESM

The Echidna EWSP system includes BAE Systems Australia’s ALR-2002 Advanced RWR and SIIDAS controller. The Echidna EWSP systems is the ADF’s ‘blueprint’ for airborne self-protection for the current and future generations of aircraft.

ALR-2002 RWR

BAE Systems Australia’s ALR-2002 RWR is to be installed on Army Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters under project Echidna. BAE Systems Australia’s modular system design has enabled the development of a RWR which can be readily adapted to a range of aircraft platforms including fast jets, transport (rotary and fixed wing), regional and long range commercial aircraft.

BAE Systems Australia is also committed to the on-going product improvement program to facilitate the incorporation of emerging technologies into the ALR-2002 RWR thus ensuring that the system continues to be able to detect both current and evolving future threats.

SIIDAS

BAE Systems Australia’s SIIDAS is a state-of-the-art system integrating commercial EW sensors, countermeasures and intelligent suite control. It provides NCW capable, highly effective, aircraft self-protection and unprecedented situational awareness to aircrew.

SIIDAS detects threatening radar, Infra Red and laser guided weapons systems then automatically selects and optimises the most appropriate countermeasures response to defeat the threat. Proliferation of light and cheap ‘shoot and scoot’ missiles with increasingly sophisticated electronically steered radars, make fast reaction times and unambiguous identification high priorities for self-protection systems. SIIDAS delivers on these operational ‘hot buttons’ without the need for aircrew intervention using open systems architecture that employs industry standard hardware and software.

PRISM

BAE Systems Australia’s PRISM family of Electronic Support Measures (ESM) comprises a series of modern equipment for shipborne and land applications. The open systems architecture of the PRISM III ESM system supports a scalable electronic warfare capability which can be readily tailored. The latest version is being fitted to the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) new Armidale Class Patrol Boats and is currently in service on the RAN’s Huon Class Minehunter Coastal vessels as an integrated part of the Anti-Ship Missile Defence System.

PRISM is also in service with the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) 41WG HQ air Defence Regiment and is fitted to the RAN’s Fremantle Class Patrol Boats.

Skills and Experience

Current programs are underpinned by a skill base covering EW systems engineering, radio frequency and microwave design, analogue and digital PCB design, development of algorithms for EW applications, software engineering, optical and electro-optical signal processing, digital signal processing, test and evaluation techniques, logistics engineering and many other specialty areas.

BAE Systems Australia can also offer a system integration capability to transform legacy EW sub-systems into integrated suites. These are integrated with mission computers and data links, providing enhanced data fusion and greatly improved platform or battlespace situational awareness.

BAE Systems Australia continues to support a range of products and solutions, in use with Australian and international defence forces. These include:

• P3C Orion ESM Integration

• PRISM 133 ESM on the RAN’s Fremantle Class Patrol Boats

• PRISM Air Defence (AD) ESM for the RAAF various submarine ELINT/ESMs

• HIPIR Battlefield VHF DF system

• High Power HF/VHF Jammer systems

• Hand-emplaced VHF Jammers
