Which Books to Refer For IIT-JEE…??…
The most important requirement for qualifying IIT-JEE is concepts. And for building concepts the most impotant thing is refering a good book. What I have seen is that students refer 10 books but don’t grasp the concept from even one. So it is better to study one book and grasp the concepts. Here I will try to explain which book to refer for different subjects. Not only subjects but also for different topics.
Lets start with PHYSICS. If someone asks me to describe Physics, I would say it is the language of concepts. If you don’t know the concepts, you are nothing but a layman. So its very important to develop the very building blocks. Physics starts with the description of Vectors, Forces, Kinematics, Mechanics. Later come important Topics like Gravitation, Fluid Mechanics, Uniform Circular Motion.
BOOKS FOR PHYSICS :-
1. H.C.VERMA :- This book is one of the most popular books in the market. H.C.Verma is a professor at IIT. His book gained wide acceptance because of its simple text and easily digestable concepts. I myself studied this book and found it to be one of the most simplistic physics book one could ever write with good problems at the end. The best part of this book is how it treats mechanics. Mechanics as I say is the most conceptual topics in Physics. And this book deals with mechanics with utmost simplicity. Even the Electricity and Magnetism chapter is good. So go for HCV as soon as you complete your 10th boards.
2. I.E.IRODOV :- This book as I say contains the most comprehensive collection of problems. With over 3000 problems this book is like a question bank. What I have seen with all Russian writers is they don’t try to simplify questions in contrast to American writers. Their problems are worth doing. And if you are solving this book be sure you have the concepts or you will not be able to solve even the first question.
3. SERWAY and JEWETT :- Serway and Jewett was one book which I bought just because of its attractive cover. But on reading this book I found it to be absolutely wonderful. There are only a few writers in the world that can make reading physics a wonderful experience. And these are some of them. The way the concepts are described are fabulous. If you are serious about Physics this book is a must. The only catch is the problems are below par.
4. RESNIC and HALIDAY :- Physics in Resnic and Haliday is great. The description is good. But for Indian students I don’t think I would suggest this book. The only reason is that the units in this book are FPS, i.e Feet, Pound, Second. Every where feet is used for distance and pound is used for weight. So there is always an amguity in mind. You will not be able to visualise if you don’t know the conversion. But otherwise a great book and the problems are also worth doing.
BOOKS FOR ORGANIC CHEMISTRY :-
1. SOLOMONs and FRYHLE :- Organic is the toughest subject according to some but the easiest according to me. Solomons makes organic an awesome experince. Just because of its simple language and detail analysis of every concepts. The reactions are explained properly and the intermediate analysis are given in detail. The problems given are good and worth giving a look at. Overall this book is brilliant and surely necessary for an organic chemistry enthusiast.
2. MORRISON and BOYD :- This book is the most widely referred book of organic by students. It describes organic very subjectively. I prefer this book to most books because of its detailed description of all reactions. But this is one drawback. The text is so much that sometimes it is very boring to study the whole thing. So what happens is that sometimes we skip some parts which comprise of important portions.
BOOKS FOR INORGANIC CHEMISTRY :-
1. J.D.LEE :- Inorganic one can say is a subject which comprise of most parts which can be mugged up. That is why many students try to go for inorganic as it does not require much concepts. But still it is interesting. When I was preparing I found inorganic to be very boring topic. But when I passed out I found out about J.D.Lee. When I checked I found it very good book. Thats why I have mentioned here. The text is very clear and straight forward.
2. O.P.TANDON :- He is one Indian writer whose book I found useful. This book has simple text and easy to understand concepts. Very good for students whose english is not so good. And also good if you want to study the main concepts and don’t want to go into the depth. It is mainly useful because of its brevity of use. So do consult it.
3. COTTON and WILKINSON :- A very good book this is with good simple text with nice concepts. Basically this book is meant to be for junior level. So can be of great help for inorganic chemistry enthusiasts. If you are looking for concepts this book will provide just that. This book is also referred to in most of the coaching institutes.
BOOKS FOR PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY :-
1. ATKINS :- One of the best books available in the market. This book really raises the bar for all other authors of its level. Really I must say this book is one of its kind. Very good if you want to go into the depth. But there is a catch. This book is written in great detail and goes into great depth. So don’t refer this book if you are not prepared to take the details. Also this book may seem to be of higher level. So I would leave this on your discretion. Have a look at this book. See if you have the ability to read it. Only then take it!
2. O.P.TANDON :- As I said earlier his books are really useful. Simple to use and easy to understand. Physical is one subject which need some basic understanding or you will not be able to solve the problems. I would advise this book for every IIT JEE aspirant. Take this book just after 10th boards and start studying the basic text. Some of the chapters like Chemical Kinetics and Chemical Equilibrium need special attention, and this book deals with them with good detail.
3. DINESH’s OBJECTIVE CHEMISTRY :- This one here contains the best collection of problems I have ever seen. A brilliant book for chemistry and even for AIEEE preparation. But I have named this book just because of its great collection of problems. If you solve this whole book without help be sure to qualify in chemistry in any exam, be it IIT, AIEEE, no matter what.
BOOKS FOR MATHEMATICS :-
1. HALL and KNIGHT for ALGEBRA :- Algebra is one topic which needs utmost attention. If you are not good in algebra don’t even think of clearing IITJEE, just prepare for AIEEE. Many of equations in physical needs knowledge of algebra. Even physics requires algebra. So if you are studying algebra why not study the best book. And this one is the best for IITJEE. The problems are very good. You don’t need to consult any other book for problems.
2. S.L.LONEY for TRIGONOMETRY :- When I first saw this book I was apprehensive about its usefulness. But when I studied it I found that this one is the best. If you are preparing for IITJEE don’t even think of any other book for this topic. Go buy this book just now if you have not bought it till now. Solve the problems and you don’t need anything else.
3. S.L.LONEY for CO-ORDINATE GEOMETRY :- As I said Loney’s books are one of its kind i.e. they are the best. I have studied this book and found it amazingly useful. Go for this book without even thinking for a second.
4. K.C.SINHA for CALCULUS :- Calculus is the most interesting part of mathematics. This book deals with calculus with great detail. What I liked about this book is its good collection of problems. Every chapter has a good collection of problems. And their level is very good. If you solve each and every problem be sure to solve any question in IIT.
5. THOMAS FINNEY for CALCULUS :- If you want to study from the very basics this book will help you. When I started this book I found the starting chapters to be so easy that I thought I made a wrong decision buying it. But as I progressed to later chapters, I found it to be extremely useful especially because of its visualizations of various concepts like integration. After studying this book you will be able to visualize what is going on.
These are some of the best books available in the market for various subjects and topics. I have personally read all of them and found them to be extremely useful. I would like to add here that you should not go for more than one book for one topic. First go to a store, have a look at the books, and then decide which one suits you. Don’t consult many books. That will only confuse you. For example if you are studying Physical, choose one book and study it from start to end without leaving any part. If you have finished one book then revise it. Don’t think that reading 10 books will give you any extra concepts. Be the master of one book, not many. Wishing all of you best of luck.

Sir,i am solving problems of physics,chemistry,maths from TMH(Tata mcgraw hills).Is TMH books good??Are those enough for iit?Sugest me some books,if those are not enough.And is there any book called IIT CRACKER of DREAMS pulication?
Sir please do reply…
Sir, I am presently studying in class 11. Can you please tell me from where I can study the Vectors part (right from scratch) as required for the Physics portion ? I have the Halliday-Resnick and NCERT books, but I do not find them much useful for this topic.
@sayak
try refer H.C.Verma….it is a great book….any more problems, ask me…
It is a wonderful collection…Thank you!
Sir, I am now in class 10 and want to start preparing for IIT.
I currently study in a CBSE affiliated school and therefore study NCERT books. Should I study State syllabus also, since they seem to have more detailed concepts.
What books can I refer to at this level?
sir iam studing in x1 class and currently taking coaching for iit-jee.
i want to know which books do u prefer
@nishant
for physics refer HCV and
for calculus refer I.L.Maron
for physical chemistry – atkins( if u r serious) or NCERT….
for organic – solomons
for coordinate, trigonometry – S.L.Loney
for any other doubt contact me…
Sir,I have appeared for IITJEE this year and I don’t think I am in a position to qualify this year.I’m getting around 135.I want to join a postal coaching and give it another try next year.Which postal coaching and test series do you suggest?Brilliant tutorials/FIITJEE/any other(please mention)
@samrat
i will suggest FIITJEE…..but brilliant’s is also good…..
its just that FIITJEE’s tutorial is more managed…where brilliant’s is a little haphazard….
brilliant is also good in some aspects….like the standard is quite OK….not like FIITJEE….where you may find very tough questions…
Hello,which book shud I prefer in chemistry as a first textbook?Ovr here,the books widely used include Arihant and NCERT,but as u say…Arihant was not very preferable to u.Plz advice
@Tukai
NCERT is an evergreen book…..use it whenever required….
sir,
iam a student of class xi.iam an iit-jee aspirant and i take coaching 4 dat.well my performance in my monthly tests(iit pattern)hasn’t been very good & i feel disheartened.all was my fault,i didnt try hard.can i crack iit wid my xiith preps only?pls suggest d books dat can b really handy!
@nikita
no need to be disheartened….performance is good only when you have a stable state of mind….so first of all try to have a calm mind and don’t be bothered by your marks so much….
i mean marks are important but if you are not able to score then just go to the basics again….
let me tell you some books that will help you….for physics try MCQ physics. it will help you build confidence.
for chemistry go for Dinesh objective chemistry. solve the questions throughly.
for maths try to first practice co-ordinate geometry and then go o to calculus. S.L.Loney is a good book. for calculus try I.L.Maron….
any other querries you are welcome to ask anytime…
[...] Which Books to Refer For IIT-JEE…??… [...]
Thanks very much for the effort..
There is one called ‘for engineers’ another one for ‘college’ etc., it would be good if you post exact title and also ISBN No., publisher, edition etc. That way it can be easily searched, purchased.
@ram
i currently work in an MNC and don’t have the book with me….i will search the book for you today and give all the information latest by tomorrow….
@ram
it is for engineers….
ISBN: 0534408427. ISBN13: 9780534408428
When you say Serway & Jewett, which particular book you are referring to pls? Because there seem to be several
@ram
i am refering to his books of PHYSICS….and i don’t think there are several…..there is only one…
Sir
I am in Class X and intend to start my prepartions for IIT-JEE. Kindly advise of the books that would appropriate for me .
Regards
Hari
@hari
for physics – for now just refer HC Verma
for maths – start with K C Sinha and S L Loney
For organic – Buy solomons without hesitation
for inorganic – get O P Tandon
thank you sir, what do you advise best way for physical chemistry?
@anant
see physical chemistry needs good concepts plus good analytical skills…..physical chemistry problems are not tough…..they just need a little practice…
what i would advise is to practice from Dinesh’s objective chemistry….it has a brilliant collection of practice problems…
sir,
im in twelth in will be appearing in 2010 for jee… ive worked hard only this year but not in eleventh…
im doing the following books:-
HC Verma-physics
Arihant-organic chem
A Das Gupta-maths
im comfortable in physics and fairly in organic chemistry..
also my coaching packages for every subject..
is my preparation going good? what else should do?
@anant
i think your preparation is going good….but what about physical chemistry….it is equally important….
give time on your preparation till december…..from january onwards don’t waste time on things you’ve left…..just strengthen your strong areas….
Listen guys,in maths,if u are thorough with the arihant books,u are virtually unbeatable in maths.So no second thoughts,just refer Loney,Hall n Knight & amit agarwal books & if done sincerely,iit maths is child’s play!
thanks for your suggestion….
how is L.A.Maron for calculus?
and R C Mukherji for chemistry?
and A Das gupta for maths?
is atkins good for physical chemistry?
@shivam
atkins is good..very good indeed….
sir pls tell me how to study physics.
my physics has always been very poor.
and i am not able to cope up with physics.
how should i prepare physics?
@manish
start with kinematics and forces chapter…..
they are the first chapters of any physics book….dont try to visualize everything…
coz no1 has ever been able to visualize physics….
just concentrate on how many variables are there and how many equations you need to solve them…
just start with this concept in mind and i am sure with time you will be able to solve anything in physics…
Sir,
I read op tandon for physical chemistry but the topics are not given in detail as i wanted.
can u plz suggest me another book…
@harsh
for physical chemistry you can refer atkins….it is really a wonderful book…..but mind you atkins is a very detailed book…..in indian writer you can see P.Bahadur….
for any further querry do contact me….
I have just started preparation for iit-jee.I am self studying. I am presently refering R.D.Sharma for mathematics. Can you suggest is it good for studying jee?
@bhakti gupta
yes it is a good book…..but don’t hesitate to solve S.L.Loney, Trigonometry……it is the best book for trigo…..and for algebra concepts refer hall and knight…..see sticking to one book is okay but when it comes to mathematics, practice is everything…..
ashutosh-jha sir i have jst started my preparation.i want to know hw i can do well in exams???give me some tips..
@deepak
first of all go for the right books….see the post and decide which books suits you the best…..study them and if you have any trouble then you are welcome to ask me…
i have studied arihant publications.it is not that bad a book.
@avijit
i never said that arihant is a bad book….
arihant is the worst book i have ever studied.
sir, is there need to solve Irodov if I have solved HCV?
@varsha
Irodov is a very good book….if you have solved HCV then it is ideal that you go for this book….it has a very good collection of problems….
which is the best book for objective chemistry
@simran
the best book is Dinesh’s objective chemistry…..its the most comprehensive book of objective chemistry available in the market right now….
nice collection.
sir i have taken admission in fiitjee.dey have given enough materials.which books should i take?
@anshul
just take one book for each topic….materials are good for solving problems….not for building concepts…
yes you are right.i also did not like arihant publication.
i did not like solomons very much. i think morison is a better book.
atkins really is a very good book.but very high level.
yes right….brilliant book….
sir, i have bought arihant’s chemistry for organic chemistry. have i made a mistake. please tell me quickly. i will return it and take a new one.
@rahul
i have found arihant books very haphazardly written…..don’t follow this book….return it and take solomons…
will HCV be enough for physics preparation?
@divya
yes divya as i have written follow just one book….HCV is in itself sufficient….you dont need any other book….but still if you wanna consult, take serway and jewett…..
