CORRECTIVE MEASURES FOR THE ERRORS ENCOUNTERED IN JEE-2010

Around 4.72 lakh candidates appeared in JEE 2010 on April 11, 2010. Certain errors in the question papers as well as in the ORS came to light immediately. The IITs sincerely regret the hardships that the candidates may have faced during the examination. The Joint Admissions Board held an emergency meeting in New Delhi on Sunday, 2nd May 2010 to arrive at appropriate corrective measures.
The Board observed unanimously that the situation does not warrant the holding of any re-examination and that the remedial measures outlined below will adequately redress the concerns of students arising out of the present situation:

Error 1: The subject headings Physics and Mathematics in the ORS are interchanged.
Corrective Measure: Each ORS (both for Paper 1 & Paper 2) will be evaluated in two ways (sequential question number-wise and subject headings-wise). In each case the higher score of the two evaluations will be taken as the candidate’s score.  Should one of the ways of evaluating lead to a mark below the minimum qualifying mark in one of the subjects, the other way will be deemed to be the ‘higher’ of the two scores.

Error 2: Question 44 in the Mathematics section of Paper 1 in code 4 of the Hindi version was not printed.
Corrective Measure: The ORS of the candidates who were given Code 4 of the Hindi version of the Question Paper 1 will be evaluated omitting Question 44 and the overall score for the Mathematics section of Paper 1 of those candidates will be appropriately scaled.

Error 3: The Instructions on “Question Paper Format and Marking Scheme” for section IV in the Hindi version of Paper 2 was wrongly printed. Each question in this section was shown to carry 3 marks instead of 8.
Corrective Measure: Each question of section IV of Paper 2 will be evaluated for 8 marks.

Error 4: In a few cases the question paper contained two unreadable pages and two partially readable pages in the Physics section of Paper 1.
Corrective Measure: Since the registration numbers of these candidates have been taken note of at the time of the examination, their ORS will be evaluated omitting the unreadable questions and their scores for the Physics section of Paper 1 will then be appropriately scaled.

The Joint Admissions Board decided to implement the above measures and to continue to monitor the situation till the process of Admission to IITs/ IT BHU and ISM Dhanbad through JEE 2010 is completed.

No re-grading or re-totaling for JEE candidates

Students appearing in the next Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission to the IITs will not have any opportunity to either seek re-grading or retotaling.

Joint Admission Board (JAB) also decided to issue performance cards to the students appearing for JEE, specifying marks and the ranks secured by them in the test.

Candidates will get to know their All India Ranks (AIR) and Category ranks through JEE websites on May 26, 2010. The board will also put out the answers of the questions on its website to help students make assessment of their performance.

Candidates can view their performance in JEE-2010 from JEE websites from June 3, 2010.

IIT INDORE building to be ready by 2011

The building of the new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore would be complete by 2011.

Informing this to the reporters, Director, IIT Indore, Dr Pradip Mathur said the institute’s focus would be to encourage students take up more number of research projects independently. The IIT classes for the current academic session are currently being conducted at the Engineering College building of Devi Ahilya University at Khandwa road.

Soon, foundation for IIT entry to be laid in class VI

Coaching institutes for IIT JEE and medicine are now catching students really young. FIITJEE for instance will be starting a course for class VI students from 2010 session to train them for competitive exams, admissions for which, will begin in January.

The course will prepare the students in advance for the prestigious National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) conducted by NCERT in class VIII. According to FIITJEE, the foundation course will also help them learn analytical skills required to prepare for IIT JEE. Kalyan Kumar, executive director, FIITJEE, said, “Starting a foundation course for class VI students will help students develop a temperament for competitive exams, develop thinking skills and to perform their best in a given timeframe.” He added, “We have been getting a lot of queries from parents for the course.” Those who clear NTSE, get a scholarship for as long as they study. It is also considered to be a high-point in the curriculum vitae in future.

Shourie: allow IITs to work autonomously

The former Union Minister, Arun Shourie, said on Saturday that academic institutions of excellence such as the Indian Institutes of Technology should be left to work autonomously without government interference.

He was speaking at the Dr. Homi Bhabha Centenary Conclave, a three-day event that began at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) here on Friday. The conclave brought together former recipients of the Homi Bhabha Fellowship. Mr. Shourie himself was a recipient.

Mr. Shourie said the TIFR, an institution of excellence, thrived because of its autonomy. “Mr. J.R.D. Tata entrusted Dr. Bhabha, and so did Pandit Nehru, with the job of setting up an institution of learning and research of the calibre of the TIFR.”

He said Dr. Bhabha’s approach was of “unobtrusive oversight.” Contrasting the TIFR with the institutions of today, Mr. Shourie said they suffered because they were unduly “besieged by the government.” “Nine new IITs were announced despite a teacher shortage,” he said. “IIT-Rajasthan was announced two-and-a-half years ago. The head of the institute was appointed two years later. Still, the site for the institute was not decided. The Chief Minister wants it in his constituency, while his predecessor wanted it in hers. Therefore, it was decided that the IIT-Kanpur would house it, thereby burdening the parent institute.”

IIT-JEE candidates to get performance cards now

Students appearing for the next Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission to IITs will get performance cards specifying marks and the ranks secured by them in the test. However, as per the new provision, they cannot seek regrading or re-totalling.

For the first time, the JEE Board would issue performance cards which can be considered as certificates by many other institutions wanting to give admission to JEE candidates. The board will also put out the answers of the questions on its website to help students make assessment of their performance.

IIT Guwahati Director Prof Gautam Baruah said the board had urged for issuing such performance cards which would serve as certificates for the students.

“Many other institutes, which want to take JEE candidates, can give admission to students on the basis of these performance cards,” Baruah said.

At present, the IITs are not issuing any scorecards to students. Certain institutes, which are giving admission to JEE candidates, have to get authenticated data from the JEE Board on the list of students and marks secured by them.

The answers will be put in the JEE website two weeks after the exam.

IIT-JEE 2010 criteria gets tougher!!!!!!!!

The eligibility criteria of 60% marks in class XII for appearing in IIT Joint Entrance Examination will be raised from next year to make students pay more attention to the board exam.In a significant move to check the growth of coaching centres, which are thriving on imparting coaching to students for IIT-JEE, the government today decided to change the criteria, so that students’ attention will be more focussed on the board exam at the class-XII level.“The present criteria is that students need to secure 60% at class XII for appearing in IIT-JEE. This is not acceptable. The minimum marks required for IIT-JEE could be raised up to 80 to 85%,” HRD minister Kapil Sibal told reporters after the meeting of the IIT Council, the apex decision-making body for the elite institutes, here.

IIT cutoff formula unchanged

For the first time in three years, the IITs have decided to stick with their formula to compute subject-wise cutoffs for the upcoming Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). This year will follow last year’s formula, where the cutoff will be the average of the marks scored by all candidates in each subject.

Under the retained system, the subject-wise cutoff, now called the Minimum Qualifying Mark for Ranking (MQMR), will be the average of the marks scored by all candidates in each subject. The move is hoped to raise the subject-wise cutoffs to two digits, unlike the past three years.

The JEE cutoffs have been a source of irritation for the IITs as they have been facing single-digit subject cutoffs – including a cutoff of zero for the Physics paper in 2008. Last year, the IITs devised a new formula after receiving flak over low subject cutoffs, but the results were not too impressive.

The cutoffs for JEE, 2009 was 8 for Physics, and 11 for both Mathematics and Chemistry — barely better than the previous two years.

IIT JEE to be more transparent

The Central Information Commission (CIC) has taken a decision that the IIT Joint Entrance Examination process will be more transparent. The details of candidates such as registration number, name, parents’ name, category, and marks secured should be open to public scrutiny.

Information Commissioner Shailesh Ghandhi overruled the objections by IIT Guwahati which organized the JEE 2009 said that these providing these details under the Right to Information Act does not constitute invasion of privacy.

The decision is being viewed as an important step in making the process transparent as disclosure of 2006 data had shown that formulas for calculating subject cut-offs did not tally. Irregularities were alleged in marks scored by wards of faculty members.

Performance cards to be certificates for IIT-JEE takers

The Joint Admission Board (JAB) for the Indian Institutes of Technology(IITs), in its meeting on August 23 with the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry, had met upon a unanimous decision to issue performance cards to the next batch of students appearing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

The performance card will apprise the candidate with his / her score and rank secured in the test.

It is for the first time that the JEE Board will acquaint the students with such cards which can be considered as certificates by many other institutions willing to admit JEE candidates.

The Board will also display the answers for the questions in the exam on its website to help students gauge their performance.

IIT-JEE training for poor students

Children from financially weak backgrounds in Maharashtra, who aspire to qualify the joint entrance examination (JEE) for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have help at hand. IITian’s Pace, a coaching centre, has decided to train underprivileged children who have the potential to get through the JEE — free of cost.

A two-hour test based on standard 10 mathematics and analytical ability will be conducted at Pace centres in Mumbai on November 8. It will be open to students currently studying in the 10th standard. “If some can’t come and take the November 8 test, they can call us. If there’s demand in a particular place, we’ll fix a centre there, send our representative and conduct the test,” said Tyagi.

The top 50 students who will be called the ‘aces’, will be groomed by IITian’s Pace. After the tests, parents of students selected will be also interviewed to determine and verify whether the child belongs to economically weak family.
