IIST – INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SPACE TECHNOLOGY – UPDATED
The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) is a deemed to be university set up under Department of Space and offers undergraduate B.Tech programme in Avionics, Aerospace Engineering and 5 year integrated masters in Applied Sciences.
The Institute provides a full fledged infrastructure of international standard to develop an excellent academic and research atmosphere. The academic programme was started in a full fledged alternate campus adjunct to world renowned Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre at Thiruvananthapuram.
Development of permanent campus has been initiated and is expected to be realized in next one or two years.
MY VIEWS ONĀ THIS INSTITUTE:-
This institute is the first Institute in India to be Ā offering a full fledged program in Aeronautical engineering. It offers both B-Tech and M.S. Degrees in aeronautical field. This Institute takes its intake through IITJEE. It is expected to have its own Entrance examination within the next 4-5 years till itsĀ develops its infrastructure.
Talking about the prospects of this institute, this institute is one of its kind and being established by ISRO and the Department of Defence, it isĀ highly creditable. So dont think about the prospects if you are selected here.
Admission here is through the IITJEE and minimum criteria is qualifying in the extended merit list. Now this insitute operates in the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and doesĀ not have its own infrastructure. So it only take 120 students now and is due to expand the seats in each stream.
The Department of Defence allocated Rs. 20 crore for its library last year. AndĀ most important of all you dont have to spend a penny to study here.
But here lies the catch. You have to work for ISRO for 5 years after graduation. If you want to leave early give 10 lakhs and go.
WELL, instead of all setbacks this one is the only institute that I can readily say will give IIT’s a run for theirĀ money. Even if you have to sign aĀ bond of 5 years to study here, let me tell you it is totally worth it. GO for this Institute if you have got the oppourtunity. And if you have an interest in aeronautical line this place is HEAVEN.

Have they announced any dates of the exam ?Till now I haven’t seen anything related to this in IIST’s website
@jyothis
i will update the date as soon as it is declared..
I want to join IIST in year 2010. I am now in 12th. I heard that they are joining to conduct their own entrance from 2010. Is it right?
@jyothis
yes jyothis it is right….they are planning to conduct a separate examination because students chose IIST only because they had no other option in other IITs….so they are planning to start their own examination which was in the pipeline for a long time….
See several virtues in the post:
1- no prolixity
2- rich content
3- it looks helpful for me

Hi. Ive got an AIR 6240 in JEE 09. So i was wondering if i could get Btech avionics/aerospace in IIST. I wanted to know what are my chances because then I may take the risk of not filling up branches like metallurgy and mining at IT-BHU and ISM dhanbad.
Thanks!
@akash
be very sure you will get aeronautical or avionics engineering at iist…..
thanx Mr. Ashutosh for ur reply. i wanna talk to u more about it. can u pls provide me ur e-mail id or reply at mine : vipulbawa@yahoo.co.in

HEY, PLS TELL ABOUT IIST COLLEGE THAT IS RELATED TO ASTRONOMY AND SPACE ENGINEERING. HOW TO APPLY FOR IT? WHAT ARE ITS JOB OPPORTUNITIES AND PACKAGES? ALSO TELL IF U HAVE ANYTHING MORE TO TELL ABOUT IT.
though i hv oder options as well, i thought if i m not gettin any b-tech course at IIT and i had interest in space, i thought why not to go with my interest. what do u say ? but its very difficult to convince my parents, specially mom, that after 4 yrs i still have work there 4 atleast 5 more yrs.
jee-5900
aieee-2500
bits-328 score
@vipul
if you are getting into iist dont even think of other options…..you can apply on its site…..it is an excellent institute…..you will get a job in ISRO which is one of the best space organizations of the world…..pay is also very good after the 6th pay commission….so no need to worry….
hello sir
firstly i would like to know that can i get into IIST with an AIR 7449.. ??
n secondly
about the job for ISRO
do they pay to us or we have to work for free for them.. ??
@gaurav
yes you can get IIST at 7749….there is quite a chance…..and they certainly pay for the work you do…..
hello sir! i have gt an EML rankin around 22k …cn i juzz expect to get IIST?
@drizzler
at 22k it is a bit difficult honestly…..IIST last year closed on 7157 rank……..no EML candidate got into IIST….such is the craze…..you can rather try for IISER…..
