IIST – INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SPACE TECHNOLOGY – UPDATED

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) is a deemed to be university set up under Department of Space and offers undergraduate B.Tech programme in Avionics, Aerospace Engineering and 5 year integrated masters in Applied Sciences.

The Institute provides a full fledged infrastructure of international standard to develop an excellent academic and research atmosphere. The academic programme was started in a full fledged alternate campus adjunct to world renowned Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre at Thiruvananthapuram.

Development of permanent campus has been initiated and is expected to be realized in next one or two years.

MY VIEWS ONĀ THIS INSTITUTE:-

This institute is the first Institute in India to be Ā offering a full fledged program in Aeronautical engineering. It offers both B-Tech and M.S. Degrees in aeronautical field. This Institute takes its intake through IITJEE. It is expected to have its own Entrance examination within the next 4-5 years till itsĀ develops its infrastructure.

Talking about the prospects of this institute, this institute is one of its kind and being established by ISRO and the Department of Defence, it isĀ highly creditable. So dont think about the prospects if you are selected here.

Admission here is through the IITJEE and minimum criteria is qualifying in the extended merit list. Now this insitute operates in the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and doesĀ not have its own infrastructure. So it only take 120 students now and is due to expand the seats in each stream.

The Department of Defence allocated Rs. 20 crore for its library last year. AndĀ most important of all you dont have to spend a penny to study here.

But here lies the catch. You have to work for ISRO for 5 years after graduation. If you want to leave early give 10 lakhs and go.

WELL, instead of all setbacks this one is the only institute that I can readily say will give IIT’s a run for theirĀ money. Even if you have to sign aĀ bond of 5 years to study here, let me tell you it is totally worth it. GO for this Institute if you have got the oppourtunity. And if you have an interest in aeronautical line this place is HEAVEN.

LATEST NEWS ABOUT IIST – 16th NOVEMBER, 2009 – OFFERS TO PAY MORE THAN INFOSYS to FRESHERS

In an interview with DNA, BN Suresh, director of Indian Institute of Space Technology (IIST), spoke aboutĀ exclusive space education and career opportunities available for the youngsters.

What are the options available for those keen to pursue a career in space science? At IIST, we have come up with three departments — avionics, aerospace engineering and physical sciences (meaning space sciences). This is the only space institute, not only in India but in the whole world, to offer under-graduate Btech courses, completing which, a student can directly pursue their specialised area of study.

How are the courses offered at IIST different? While general courses are taught at premiere educational institutions, at IIST we also focus on the application part. This means, when we recruit, say, IIT students, they need at least six months of training to be inducted in a project. But our students can directly start working in a project. Also, since IIST is located near to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) centre, our students get the opportunity to interact with working scientists frequently. This provides them with an onsite exposure.

What are the qualifications required to get admitted to IIST?As of now, any plus-two science student appearing for IIT and JEE entrance exams, can apply for IIST. Based on his/her rank, a student is selected. But we are planning to start our own entrance exams soon and the pattern will be similar to that of IIT and JEE entrance tests.

How will a student benefit from studying at IIST?The students will have access to ISRO labs for real-time experiments that are related to space programmes. Also, we encourage them to take up internships at ISRO labs for a month that will help them know about different technologies in space-related systems. We also encourage them to take up full projects in the areas of robotics, unmanned aerial vehicle, advanced solar cell, autonomous fire fighter and so on. Also, students can study at premiere institutes in Europe and the US since we have signed a MoU with those institutes for student exchange programmes.

What are the job opportunities? If a student gets admitted to IIST, he/she is certain to be given an opportunity to work with ISRO for a minimum period of five years. This will give him/her enough opportunity to put his knowledge into use. With the sixth pay commission’s proposals being implemented, we will pay more than what Infosys offers a fresher.

      @jyothis
      yes jyothis it is right….they are planning to conduct a separate examination because students chose IIST only because they had no other option in other IITs….so they are planning to start their own examination which was in the pipeline for a long time….
